Bank of Valletta, a founding sponsor of the Summer University of Performing Arts (SUPA), is supporting the second edition of this artistic and educational initiative.

The Summer University of Performing Arts 2006, being held throughout the month of August at the Old University MITP Theatre in St Christopher Street, Valletta, is being organised by the Theatre Studies Division of the University of Malta’s Medi-

terranean Institute. This year’s events will consist of a four-week programme of theatre performances, master classes and workshops and international work exchanges, as well as a concluding conference.

SUPA 2006 events include a Digital Live Art piece by an international team of researchers coordinated by Toni Sant, performances by CIRT (Milan) and Icarus Project (Malta), as well as Deformis by Teatru IXIDOR under the direction of Ruben Zahra. Full details can be found on www.tarf.info

Bank of Valletta PR, Communications and Corporate Branding head Michael Galea presented the bank’s sponsorship to Frank Camilleri, coordinator of theatre studies, University of Malta and artistic director of the Icarus Performance Project (Malta) during a rehearsal for the forthcoming performances.

Speaking during the presentation, Mr Galea said: “Supporting the arts constitutes a main pillar of Bank of Valletta’s Community Programme. We are proud to be the founding sponsor of SUPA, having supported this initiative since its inception last year. Our sponsorship of the second edition of SUPA underlines our commitment to sustain this most valid initiative that is contributing towards the enrichment of Malta’s cultural calendar during summer.”

Mr Galea spoke about the leading role that the bank is playing in supporting the national cultural calendar this summer. “Apart from supporting SUPA, Bank of Valletta is extending its full support to the Malta Arts Festival and is also taking an active role in the organisation of the BOV Streets Alive events. All these initiatives are also having a positive impact on the regeneration of our capital city, Valletta,” he said.

Dr Camilleri said: “The aim of SUPA 2006 is to explore the links between theatre and other performing arts while at the same time instilling a culture of research and reinforcing professionalism in the Maltese theatre scene. SUPA 2006 will also seek to provide Maltese performers with an opportunity to develop their skills and to encounter, at close quarters, professional international performers. SUPA 2006 will serve to promote the performative profile of the University of Malta’s Theatre Studies Division.

“Though mainly aimed at a Maltese audience, SUPA 2006 will be having various international tutors, mainly, Nhandan Chirco, Mario Ruggeri, Rodolfo Rossi, Cristina Biagini, and Marco Marzocchi. A substantial number of international participants will also be in Malta for SUPA-related events,” Dr Camilleri concluded.
