Eden Arena Purchases giant fans in time for the Fresh Big Weekender

In two weeks’ time Malta will see two of the world’s biggest DJs descend on the arena. Paul Oakenfold and Armin Van Buuren will be playing on 13 and 14 August respectively. Simon De Cesare, ELG company secretary and Eden Arena manager stated, “The Eden Leisure Group has gone all the way to the States to purchase two 24-ft diameter wonders which, while rotating slowly, provide a solution to cooling and heating problems in large closed spaces. The arena used to be an ice skating rink with extremely powerful air-conditioning able to cool to 10 degrees however with thousands of revellers and temperatures in Malta rising to 40 degrees in August, we need a little help to keep people really cool.”

“The fans don’t cool the air, but they do make the air feel cooler. Moving air helps moisture evaporate off skin, taking heat with it. With fans, the ambient temperature can feel several degrees cooler.” These fans operate on the principle of convection currents.

A slow-moving overhead fan generates a column of air equal to its diameter. When that column of air hits the floor, it radiates outward until it hits a wall, partition, or column of air from another fan. There, it’s forced upward to the ceiling where it circulates down through the fan’s blades. Over time, the air movement gains momentum, creating cooling breezes throughout the facility.

This destratification of air in high-ceilinged facilities is the single biggest energy saver in high-ceilinged buildings today. “We have found that these fans are ideal for the Eden Arena and are proud to say that they are being installed just in time for the Fresh Big Weekender on 13 and 14 August. They will provide a comfortable atmosphere for public, the performers and staff alike.”

The group is also investing significant resources in installing them in other Eden Leisure Group venues to help in the summer months.
