Christopher Camilleri is taking part in the ICF Flatwater Racing Championships to be held at Szeged, Hungary, between today and Sunday.

Camilleri went to Szeged a few days ago where he has undergone a training programme organised by the ICF.

Camilleri will be in action today as he will be paddling his way through the K1 heats. This is the second time that Camilleri is participating in these championships. Camilleri will compete in the 200, 500 and 1,000 metre races. Earlier on this year Camilleri managed the time of 38.18s for the 200m race and a time of 1.54m for the 500m one.

In Flatwater Racing, paddlers race on a straight course, each boat in a separate lane, over three different distances : 200m, 500m and 1000m. There are kayak events for men and women, in single (K1), double (K2) and four boats (K4), and canoe events, only for men, in single (C1), double (C2) and four boats (C4). In a kayak, the paddler is seated and uses a two-blade paddle, while in a canoe, the paddler is kneeling on one knee, and uses a single blade paddle.

Camilleri has been training on a special programme for these championships over the past 12 months, but the competition from other paddlers will be tough.
