Malta Independent Thursday, 17 August 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Once again the team from Stella Maris College managed to win an edition from the British Airways Youth Series. Although totalling 56 points they equally shared four categories with Furtu Selvatico Trade School’s who only gathered 25 points. The remaining category went to Qawra Wrestling Club.

David Sant (Qawra Wrestling Club) returned to competitive wrestling in the -74kg and in so doing he overcame the challenges coming from Rene Coleiro (Furtu Selvatico) and Manuel Schembri (Stella Maris). The latter two ended second and third in that order.

Charlon Borg (Furtu Selvatico) had to go all out to win the +85kg. He found Aidan Buhagiar and Karl Paris (both Stella Maris) well prepared. The latter two ended second and third respectively.

On the other hand Adam Vella (Stella Maris) had no trouble at all placing first in the -55kg.

The -54kg was quite interesting considering the contestants for first place being Matthew Bonnici, Jean Pierre Zerafa (both Stella Maris) and Jonathan Gatt (Furtu Selvatico). However Bonnici managed to win all his bouts with Gatt having to content with second place.

Duncan Farrugia (Furtu Selvatico), son of former international Pawlu Farrugia, won the -55kg (boys) by a fall against an only opponent.

Competition officials: Referees: Abraham Vassallo and Lawrence Attard; Timekeeper: Jesmond Giordemaina; Pairing Master: Pierre Cassar assisted by Manuel Cilia; Coordinator: Simon A. Bonello.
