A Tribute to our great colleague Lewis Portelli

Malta Independent Sunday, 10 September 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

How shocking it was to hear of the sudden death of our dear colleague and veteran sports journalist Lewis Portelli.

Who would have imagined that Lewis was to pass away so suddenly? Up to a few days ago, he was heard and seen taking part in television and radio discussions on the recent World Cup finals. I am sure that in this period of time, he was making the finishing touches to the 20th edition of the Malta Football Year Book.

I have known Lewis for more than 40 years, when I joined Rediffusion as a junior sports contributor. Since those very first days, I admired his dynamism, dedication and meticulous preparation to present radio and TV sports programmes which were all followed by thousands of sports enthusiasts. You could easily understand his zeal and professionalism in everything he did. He always had a word of advice to all those around him.

I can never forget the support he always gave me as president of the local Sportswriters Association. He was so proud to have been one of its founder-members. His words of advice were extremely precious during my 17 years as association president.

There will never be another Lewis Portelli. He was in a class of his own. We are extremely fortunate to have been in his company as we have all learnt from his capabilities.

He also deserved each and every local and foreign honour bestowed upon him. His altruism was beyond any limits. Lewis will still be treasured through his numerous sports publications – a mine of valuable information and statistics.

In this sad moment, our thoughts go to his wife Guza who helped Lewis in no small way to achieve his greatness.

Malta has definitely lost a true doyen in sports journalism.
