The Malta team, made up of shooters Justin Attard, Nicky Carabott, Gorg Cassar and Frans Pace, yesterday won the Trap event in the European Commonwealth Shooting Championships 2006 held at the Bidnija shooting ranges.
Malta totalled 452 points to beat Wales’ challenge, finishing second with a total of 447 points. Gibraltar placed third with 380 points.
The Maltese shooters’ individual scores were the following:
Justin Attard (116), Nicky Carabott (113), Gorg Cassar (112) and Frans Pace (111).
Welsh shooter Michael Wixey won the individual Trap event as he went on to hit 21 clays in the final barage for a total of 139 points. Frans Pace was second with 133 points and Justin Attard third with 132. Gorg Cassar finished fifth after losing a shoot-off with Wales’ shooter Ian Belcher.
Gorg Cassar won the veteran category. Alfred Falzon was second and Joe Cutajar third.
The Maltese shooters also dominated the Juniors event as justin Attard finished first, Ryan Bugeja was runner-up and Kurt Cardona finished third.
Michael Wixey of Wales was the best foreign shooter totalling 118 points, ahead of Kevin Cowles (114) and Ian Belcher (111).
Thanks to the various sponsors, these week-long international championships were a huge success.
