Balinese Dance comes to Valletta

Malta Independent Friday, 29 September 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Enrico Masseroli, actor, dancer and director of The Pirate Ship International Theatre Ensemble, will be presenting two spectacular activities on 14 October, as part of Notte Bianca – Lejl Imdawwal, organised by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts under the auspices of the Ministry for Tourism and Culture, in collaboration with the National Lotteries for Good Causes Fund, Ministry of Finance.

The first act is a lecture demonstration of oriental masks for theatre and dance, entitled Topeng: maschere dall’isola degli Dei (Topeng: Masks from the Island of the Gods).

The Topeng, with its colourful masks, is an integral part of the sacred traditional ceremonies of Bali. In his demonstration, Enrico Masseroli will create a gallery of characters in costume typical of the island of Bali, which may resemble those in the Commedia dell’Arte tradition of Renaissance Italy.

The Balinese theatre and dance is a fusion of ancient, rich, dramatic styles and modern creations articulated by a language composed of gestures, poses and choreography.

Later in the same evening, Enrico Masseroli will interpret 13 roles in an extraordinary solo performance entitled L’incredibile storia del re Bedahulu (The incredible story of King Bedahulu).

Adapted by Masseroli himself under the direction of his tutor, I. Made Djimat, this show has been performed in festivals in many major cities in Italy, Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Sweden, and Spain.

The lecture demonstration will run from 6.30pm till 7.45pm in the courtyard of The Malta Chamber of Commerce, Palazzo Parisio, Valletta. The solo performance will then start at 9.45pm and will end at 11.00pm at the same venue. Enrico Masseroli’s participation was made possible thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Notte Bianca – Lejl Imdawwal Valletta 2006 is being supported by the Valletta Local Council, Malta Tourism Authority, The Westin Dragonara Resort Malta and Capital 88.7. Entrance to both activities is free of charge.
