Qormi 2
Tarxien R 1
Qormi registered their first win of the season as they toppled Tarxien with the odd goal in three.
Their hero yesterday was substitute Michael Borg Olivier who scored the winning goal on 66 minutes, just three minutes after coming on as a substitute, with the same player missing some chances near the end that would have given Qormi a win with a bigger margin.
The match was very balanced, especially in the first half, but with Qormi came out strongly in the second fourty five minutes to emerge worthy winners.
Tarxien started to show the better ideas in attack even though they were without captain Simon Shead.
Tarxien took the lead on 18 minutes when Ryan Darmanin headed in a well taken freekick by defender George Cutajar.
The same Damanin went close again with a well taken shot missing the target.
Qormi were back on level terms on 27 minutes, with a rather soft goal when the Tarxien goalkeeper Curmi fumbled a harmless looking freekick taken by Talcevski, with the ball finishing at the back of the net.
Tarxien could have taken the lead again on 33 minutes but Farrugia’s header slightly missed the target. The first half came to an end with a good Sadowski shot going well over the bar.
In the second half Qormi looked more aggressive and organised than their opponents, with Carmel Formosa missing a sitter at the start.
On 66 minutes Michael Borg Olivier scored what proved to be the winner. Borg Olivier who had only just came in as a substitute scored from close range a Kurt Zammit freekick.
Tarxien’s expected revival failed to materialise and Qormi found ample space in their opposing half, creating several scoring chances with Michael Borg Olivier going very near on a couple of occasions, with Tarxien goalkeeper Curmi making amends with some brilliant saves.
Naxxar L 4
Mosta 0
Naxxar obtained a glorious first victory of the season in the derby against Mosta.
The score however does not give a true picture of the proceedings, as Mosta were surely the dominant force especially in the first fourty five minutes, creating several scoring chances, and missing them all.
Naxxar on their part were cynical in their conclusions, practically scoring with every shot at goal.
Mosta stormed forward from the initial whistle but failed to score, and Naxxar opened the score with their first shot at goal on 23 minutes when defender Ramon Schembri headed in a Zammit freekick.
Mosta kept the pace, but were unlucky when Bryan Agius hit the post.
The second half was on the same pattern of the first with Mosta constantly on the offensive. In the opening minutes they went very close to a more than deserved equaliser but the Naxxar defence held out, and on 75 minutes the Lions scored the second goal through Gilbert Camilleri.
Mosta were now completely demoralised and Naxxar scored two further goals in the final five minutes to make this win a memorable one.
The goals were scored by Glenn Magri and substitute Fabian Debono who scored a gem of a goal on 87 minutes
