For the fourth consecutive year the Gozo Sailing club is going through an extensive activities calendar consisting of Windsurfing and laser races, a children’s optimist introduction course, a windsurfing introduction course and members’ social activities.
The highlight of the season was the MMA Round Comino race. Six lasers and eight windsurfers set off from Hondoq bay in an anticlockwise course round Comino with a starting wind of 8 knots increasing to 15 knots by half way.
Jesmond Cefai finished first in the windsurfing class closely beating Mario Ballucci. The first part of the laser class race was closely contested with frequent changes in the leading position. James Pace pulled away in the second part of the race and finished a comfortable first.
A high interest was shown from overseas visitors to participate in future training courses and to try and hire sailing equipment from the Gozo Sailing Club. Unfortunately these visitors, notwithstanding the very good sailing potential that the island of Gozo offers, went home disappointed, as the Gozo Sailing Club is not capable to handle such requests.
The Club has been requesting the help of the authorities to assist in setting up of a permanent base.
An ideal location in Marsalforn Bay has been identified. This would permit the Club to run full time courses for locals and foreigners.
