An injury time goal by Chima Dozie enabled Senglea to avoid their first defeat of the season against lowly San Gwann.

San Gwann had taken a first half lead through a glorious header by Malcolm Buttigieg and defended for long stretches in the second half, only to suffer Dozie’s strike in the dying seconds.

The result can be considered a fair result considering Senglea’s efforts especially in the second period. However San Gwann, who were without the injured player coach Danilo Doncic, can consider themselves unlucky not to have snatched their first win of the season.

Near the end Senglea’s veteran Lawrence Attard came in as a substitute to make his first appearance this season. The point earned by Senglea lifts them in second place together with Mosta and St Patrick, while San Gwann had to be happy with the second point of the season.

San Gwann were the best team in the opening stages, but they failed to produce dangerous actions in front of goal. Senglea were more direct in their approach and were very unlucky not to forge agead on 19 minutes when a Matthew Borg header slammed against the crossbar with the San Gwann goalkeeper completely beaten.

Eight minutes later Senglea had another good opportunity with a good move between Dozie and Timothy Thomas, with the latter’s shot well saved by Justin Spiteri. On 35 minutes San Gwann took the lead, when a well taken corner by Brincat was headed in by Malcolm Buttigieg.

Senglea pushed forward in the remaining minutes in search of the equaliser but only came close with a Chima Dozie effort that went over the crossbar following a Gatt corner from the right.

In the second half Senglea kept constant pressure on the San Gwann defence. Goalkeeper Justin Spiteri was frequently called into action to intercept numerous dangerous crosses. Apart from this, Senglea failed to be dangerous in front of goal with very few scoring opportunities. Their only chances came through a Dozie shot on the turn which was well saved by Spiteri, with the same Spiteri blocking a grounder by Darren Grech.

In their few sorties up front, San Gwann went close to score their second goal with an Antonio Saliba header going over the bar.

Near the end Senglea’s Simon Aquilina tried his luck with a long distance shot that went slightly wide.

On 92 minutes Senglea obtained a dramatic equaliser when following a Darren Grech corner, Fsadni’s shot was deflected into the net by Dozie who saved his side from suffering the first defeat of the season.
