A man was fined Lm3,000 yesterday and had his driving licence suspended for 18 months after he was found guilty of manslaughter in a road accident.
Mario Zammit, 34, from Dingli had been accused of the involuntary homicide of Angelo Borg, 81, from Birkirkara, who was crossing a road in Zebbug at 10.15am on 14 September 2002.
Handing down his judgement, magistrate Saviour Demicoli noted that Zammit had been driving carelessly, had failed to keep a proper lookout and had been speeding on a road of inferior quality.
The magistrate pointed out that although Mr Borg had crossed the road in a dangerous manner, this did not exonerate Zammit, because it was not the only factor behind the death of Mr Borg.
