Education In waste management

Malta Independent Sunday, 8 October 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

WasteServ, in collaboration with its contractor medEcology, is currently conducting waste management training sessions for local council staff members. Over 60 people from 27 local councils have applied to attend these courses, which are being co-funded by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund. WasteServ is investing Lm45,000 in waste management training and educational seminars for schools, local councils, Green leaders of government departments and SMEs.

A training Needs Analysis was carried out in local councils earlier this year to identify what training needs had to be met. Results from this survey revealed that local councils require more waste management information. Local council officers themselves expressed the wish to follow a training course in this area so that they can pass on accurate information to residents in their respective localities.

WasteServ believes that it is of utmost importance that officers are knowledgeable and skilful in waste separation and management since they have to answer customer care queries on a daily basis. For this reason, WasteServ is inviting local council staff members for a training course that will address waste management issues, particularly the use of bring-in sites and the soon to be available civic amenity sites for separated bulky waste. The seminars also include onsite visits to the Maghtab Environment Complex and to the Sant’Antnin Waste Treatment Plant in Marsascala.
