Hamrun Spartans notched their second consecutive victory of the season thanks to a solid display and two first half goals that swept Mosta off their feet. The match was rather disappointing with Hamrun never setting houses on fire, but were still good enough to emerge easy winners.

Mosta were in dismal form yesterday and the Spartans’ victory was more than deserved. Mosta looked weak in attack as they failed to score for their second consecutive match. The Spartans with this second win can aim for the top places, after a dismal start to the season. Atanas Marinov is finally shaping a good and solid side that will surely have a say in the promotion race.

Mosta still smarting from their drubbing against Naxxar in the derby made some changes to their line up, with coach Vince Carbonaro introducing his son Claude between the posts instead of Joshua Galea. Striker Carlos Camenzuli was used as a substitute when Hamrun had built a two-goal lead.

The Spartans were without midfielder Rupert Mangion, but welcomed back striker Stefan Sultana. Hamrun were in superb form in the first half, with Sultana, Spiteri and Meilak forming an excellent attacking trio. The Mosta defence panicked under pressure giving away easily.

Hamrun had a brilliant spell midway through the first half scoring two goals in the space of five minutes. On 20 minutes an Aaron Attard from the left found Gaetam Spiteri completely unmarked just inside the area and the striker first timed beautifully in the far corner of the net. Still under shock Mosta suffered another blow when Hamrun scored their second goal. A good free-kick from the right by Briffa was headed in by Steve Meilak giving the helpless Carbonaro no chance to save.

In the second half the Spartans rested on their laurels with Mosta unable to take advantage of their territorial superiority.

Mosta however went close on 70 minutes when from a Brayn Agius corner, Steve Borg’s header beat Falzon, but substitute John Debattista cleared off the line.

In the final minutes Hamrun could have easily added a third goal through Meilak, all alone in front of goal, but his shot went inches wide.
