National coach Dusan Fitzel jotted his name alongside Terenzio Polverini, Pippo Psaila and Victor Scerri in Maltese football history yesterday as his side brushed aside Hungary’s challenge to register a first win after 31 years of waiting.

Polverini, Psaila and Scerri had led their sides to Malta’s only victories – as written elsewhere on this page – in the past.

After the match, Fitzel was a happy man and mostly satisfied with his team’s excellent performance and great result. “I want to thank all my players for they have worked hard for this result. It is a pity we did not score more goals after all that we managed to create. Michael Mifsud could have scored at least three on his own. Still I am glad for this player for whom I have found a new position which is more to his liking. And as to Schembri, he has already confirmed that he is Malta’s player of the future.

“I feel very good after this win, but it is a never-ending story. We will have to continue working harder. I am glad that the players want to improve and that is what we will try to do in our future matches, starting with the friendly against Lithuania next month,” he said.

Hungary coach Peter Bozsik congratulated Malta on its achievement. “They deserved it. I thought we had a good start, but after the red card it became difficult. When we suffered the second goal, it was all over. We we lucky that Malta did not score more goals,” he said.
