The last 14 for the 2007 Malta Song For Europe have now been announced. An incorrect list has already been published on certain websites, but this was the line-up for a different Maltese music festival.

The second phase of the selection, that reduced the 35 songs chosen to 14, took place at St Dorothy’s School in Zebbug.

The judging panel consisted of Ramon Galarza from Portugal (composer), Alex Panaya from Greece (singer who represented Cyprus in 1995 and 2000 and has been a backing singer on various occasions, including for the winning Greek song in 2005), Veronica Mortensel from Denmark (singer and composer), Claus Storgaard from Denmark (singer, musician and composer), Nicholas Graham from the UK (producer, composer and writer), Deni Lewis from the UK (composer and writer) and Bruno Berberes from France (head of Entertainment, French Television).

OGAE Malta revealed some interesting details. The singers performed on stage in the main hall of St Dorothy’s School. The performances were held behind closed doors and Anton Miceli from the Maltasong Board ensured that no journalists entered the areas that were out of bounds for the media. Martin Gauci from the Maltasong Board ushered the singers from the foyer to the backstage of the hall, and Mike Spiteri took the role of stage manager. He accompanied the singers on stage and stayed with them during the sound check, thus ensuring that they were all happy with the sound – a crucial point at this stage, when the songs are mainly judged on the live performances.

OGAE Malta also noticed that the judges were applauding the performers at the end of their performances. It also revealed that Isabelle has a power ballad; Lyndsay Pace wrote her own song, The Truth in Me, to the music of Paul Abela; Gianella Mazzola’s song was written by Gerard James Borg and Philip Vella, as was Anabelle Debono’s song.

It also remarked that the singers had a professional attitude for this event, to the extent that many of them (especially the female artistes) were wearing stylish outfits and had professional makeup.
