Police investigations are under way to find arsonists who set on fire a number of cars in Birkirkara and a bring-in site in Iklin in the early hours of Saturday morning.

In a statement, the police said that at around 1.15am, they were informed that there were several cars on fire in Birkirkara. Preliminary investigations revealed that arsonists had set fire to a Skoda Favorit in St Helen’s Square. An Opel Kadett and a Toyota Corolla, which were parked near to the Skoda, were also on fire.

Some time later, the police were informed of more cars on fire in the same area but in different streets. The police said a Fiat 127 was set alight in Triq il-Herba while in Triq Tumas Fenech, a Morris Marina was also set on fire.

All five cars were extensively damaged in the fire but no injuries were reported.

While members of the Civil Protection Department were still dealing with the cars on fire, the police were informed of yet another fire. This time, arsonists had targeted a bring-in site in Triq Dun Karm in Iklin.

Duty magistrate Michael Mallia was informed about the arson incidents and he appointed a team of court experts to assist in the magisterial inquiry.
