YoungStir a newly established Maltese youth organisation run by professional youth workers, recently participated in the MEYE’s Youth Support Programme (July – December 2006) through a project entitled “Unite”. The main aim of this project was to bring together young people from each locality in Malta and help them develop a collective activity in order to foster cooperation between youth so as to increase tolerance, respect for diversity through unity and engender greater understanding of the different lifestyles, cultures and/or identities of each respective locality in Malta.
After launching “United” to all local councils in Malta, a group of young people representing six local councils showed interest to participate in this project. The youth workers coordinating this project met with the young participants to discuss the project and come up with a collective activity young people would embark on. Following this meeting it was decided to create a monochrome painting symbolising various features (eg. monuments, historical buildings, churches and so forth) located in the localities youth reside in. The young people were entrusted to find pictures of these features and forward them to the youth workers and a local artist who scanned the outlines of the pictures onto a blank sheet of heavyweight cardboard paper.
The management of Rafikis, a new café near Minerva book shop, kindly allowed them to use one of the rooms upstairs to paint in. The finished painting was then presented to the organisers of this year’s L-Istrina in the hope that the proceeds of this painting would go to a charitable cause. Therefore anyone wishing to view and buy this painting is kindly asked to visit St. Thomas Sammut Hall, Floriana where all of this year’s paintings will be on show.
