The Association of Traders and General Retailers, on behalf of shops, bars, restaurants and other establishments in Valletta, thanked the organisers of the “Notte Magica” for the success that it was.

In a statement, the GRTU said that when the commercial sector joins forces with public entities and local councils, events can be set up that are of benefit to all, especially the general public.

The GRTU said that all of Valletta’s streets were a hive of activity and all establishment owners were serving locals and tourists alike well into the night.

The GRTU took it upon itself to get comments from establishment owners in various streets of Valletta.

Merchants Street – Participation levels were a record. Few shops did not open and all those open for business reported very good trade. Those shops which were not open, however, left their lights on to contribute to the activity. Shop owners in this street requested more entertainment – similar to what was happening in Republic Street – the next time such an event is organised.

Zachary Street – Establishments in this street also reported good levels of activity and some said that their results were better than what they achieved over the Christmas season. Many shops stayed open till after 10pm.

Melita Street – Shop owners in this street praised the event and hoped more would be forthcoming as it boosted business.

St John Street – Establishment owners in this street agreed that they had never seen so many people, not even during Christmastime.

Freedom Square – The vast majority of establishment owners in this area of Valletta said that this was a very good event and that they would lend their support to similar activities in the future. Shops stayed open till 9pm and cafeterias were open until the early hours of the morning.

South Street – Shops in this street reported positive trade and bars and restaurants also reported booming business.

Republic Street – The main street in Valletta was obviously the busiest and constant entertainment made it harder for people to concentrate on shopping, however, shop owners were still very pleased with their sales. The fact that shops stayed open after midnight also helped boost trade.
