Alternattiva Demokratika - the Green Party chairman Harry Vassallo yesterday reiterated the importance of open and public spaces in all localities in Malta and Gozo.

Speaking at a press conference in Wied Blandun Gardens in Paola, Dr Vassallo said that “having a public garden in a locality is not enough; we must also ensure that such places are safe and suitable for families and children. As is the case in Wied Blandun Gardens in Paola, a number of these public places are being used as a hub for drug taking."

Dr Vassallo showed journalists a number of used syringes left on the ground, saying that “when these places are left abandoned this is their ultimate fate; how can parents feel safe knowing their children might be playing in these gardens? What if someone falls over, making contact with a used syringe, and possibly even get infected?”

Dr Vassallo reiterated that the Greens in the Paola local council will set a target to have a solar water heater in every house of Paola. This will not only result in cheaper electricity bills, but also cleaner and safer air to breathe.

In his concluding remarks Dr Vassallo said the Green Party's presence in local councils is crucial if the residents want their local council to work for their well-being, instead of work for their respective central political parties.
