The Nationalist led councils of Qala and Kercem have fulfilled only 55 per cent and 40 per cent respectively of their electoral manifesto, Malta Labour Party leader Alfred Sant said yesterday.

During a visit to the two villages, Dr Sant listed a number of promises that the Nationalist Party had failed to fulfil since the local elections three years ago.

Dr Sant said PN councillors in Qala had promised a sports complex at Ta’ Grunju, a seating area and parking space for the football pitch and gardens and a belvedere in Triq Zewwieqa. These, however, had never materialised, even though plans were published. The Labour leader also denounced the council’s failure to re-surface roads and its failure to build day and night care centres for the elderly.

On the other hand, said Dr Sant, Labour councillors undertook to implement a road resurfacing programme, put pressure on the central administration to service roads that fall within its remit, equip the local library and build water culverts leading to Tal-Marga Valley.

Speaking in Kercem, Dr Sant accused the PN councillors of shying away from their promises. He said the council had failed to build a belvedere, a family park, a civic centre, water culverts and a recreational centre in Santa Lucija.

He promised that the MLP councillors would implement a road resurfacing programme, would mend pavements, finalise preparatory work for the building of a belvedere and identify a site for a recreational centre in Santa Lucija.

On Monday evening, Dr Sant visited Vittoriosa, Santa Lucija and Paola and told party supporters that by way of its plan for a new beginning, and with the help of all people of good will, the MLP would bring about a change for the better.

In Santa Lucija, the Labour leader promised that MLP councillors would upgrade the quality of life of the residents.

In Vittoriosa he accused Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi of saying that the forthcoming elections were not that important, while the government will hold a feast for the family at the historic city next Sunday. Dr Sant inspected work recently carried out in St Lawrence Street by the Labour-led council that should have been carried out long ago by the central government.

During his visit to Paola, the MLP leader promised an MLP council that would deliver more than promised, with the help of a future Labour government.
