Malta Independent Thursday, 1 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Helen O’Grady Academy through the support of Agenda Bookshops has donated a number of children’s books to the schools where the internationally acclaimed developmental drama classes are held.

St Edwards College, Attard Primary School, De La Salle and St Dorothy’s Convent School where each presented with a large variety of reference books and children’s literature for children up to the age of 12. The donation is very much in line with Agenda’s commitment to encourage literacy among primary school children.

Alan Montanaro, principal of the Helen O’Grady Academy branch in Malta explained that the curriculum of the Helen O’Grady Academy uses a huge body of developmental drama designed to boost self-esteem and creativity while teaching English and independent thinking. The connection to reading is therefore extremely strong.

“We’d just finished a play about pirates, which actually tackles the very important issue of bullying”, explained, Mr Montanaro. “The children’s faces lit up when they were given books with titles like The Seven Seas, The Legend of Blackbeard and Treasure Island.

The donation of these colourful books ties in with the recent launch of the Agenda Kids Club. Students joining the club will benefit from special offers and discounts on selected books, story-telling sessions and a free newsletter among other gifts. To also help promote environmental responsibility, the Agenda Kids Club also sponsors a tree in the name of each new member in conjunction with the Tree for You initiative.
