Malta Independent Thursday, 1 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The Qormi local council spent Lm200,000 in buying a town house and converting it into its new fully accessible offices, said Malta Labour Party leader Alfred Sant yesterday, while visiting the town.

The new premises houses a learning and training centre as well as a day care centre for elderly citizens. Dr Sant said that by housing the centre in the new premises, the council was saving up to Lm6,000 annually in rent which it used to pay for the previous centre.

While giving a résumé of the council’s work since it was elected in 2004, Dr Sant said it fulfilled 92 per cent of its manifesto, which included work carried out in the fields of education, culture, youth, sport and infrastructure.

The local council upgraded the regional and local libraries, organised free courses in technology in collaboration with ST Microelectronics, and courses in English, Maltese, mathematics, literature and crafts. The Labour leader outlined the cultural activities organised by the council, including a concert given by the three band clubs of Qormi, a carnival party, and bread and wine festivals.

As regards youth and sport, said Dr Sant, the council agreed with the Mikiel Anton Vassalli School to allow local youths use of the school’s sporting facilities, while the road leading to the shooting range at Tal-Handaq was repaired. Qormi youths participated in seminars overseas and produced an audio-visual documentary about the town, while the youth empowerment centre was upgraded.

Dr Sant promised that a Labour council in Qormi would conclude the embellishment around Tal-Blat Chapel, create a recreational zone at Blat 2, install two new playing fields, and help local sport clubs, while assisting and organising activities for senior citizens and the disabled.
