The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses yesterday complained about the attitude of the Nursing and Midwifery Council which wanted to impose a payment without first consulting with the union.
The union said in a statement that this attitude was unacceptable and it warned that it would be taking the necessary action to protect its members’ interests.
The payment would be made annually for a midwifery or nursing licence to be renewed.
The MUMN said it had held a meeting with the council’s president, Dr Malcolm Mifsud, and they had agreed to meet again before the payment was imposed. However, the council has imposed the payment and seemed to have no intention of meeting the union.
The MUMN said it wrote to Dr Mifsud on 4 December but no reply has been
forthcoming.
