Liberian Arraigned on drug trafficking charges

Malta Independent Sunday, 18 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

A Liberian man, Benedict Nyumah, was arraigned in front of Magistrate Michael Mallia yesterday and charged with importation and possession of cocaine not for his personal use and with planning to sell the drug.

It had earlier been reported that a 32-year-old man of Liberian origin, holding a Dutch passport and resident in England, was held at the airport after arriving on a flight from London.

The man was seen to behave strangely when he was stopped by Customs officials and the police, who suspected that the accused was carrying capsules containing drugs in his stomach.

The man was escorted to St Luke’s Hospital where he was found to be carrying a substantial amount of capsules containing cocaine.

The accused was refused bail.
