A Chinese man with Australian nationality was jailed for six months after he pleaded guilty to making financial gains from human trafficking on 19 November 2006.
Liu Xin, 35, who was born in Beijing but who has an Australian passport, pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. Magistrate Lawrence Quintano jailed Xin for six months.
Handing down his judgement, magistrate Quintano noted that the jail term was agreed upon by the prosecution and the defence and was enough considering that Xin cooperated with the police.
The magistrate also ordered that the time spent in preventive arrest be deducted from the jail term.
Dr Giannella Caruana Curran and Dr Manwel Mallia assisted the accused while Police Inspector Mario Haber prosecuted.
