Extensive infrastructural works are currently under way at The Valletta Waterfront and its surrounding areas. Works are currently being carried out in the new embarkation lounge linking it to Pinto Ferry Terminal. The final phase of original works started two years ago, and will be completed by end of July, just in time for seasonal requirements when the ferry terminal will be used for commuters travelling to and from Sicily and mainland Italy.
Currently, Viset Malta plc is also undertaking research on the ways and means of how to improve the quay infrastructure. This will render the quays more efficient so that the demand of cruise liners for berthing spaces is addressed.
Studies include geological investigations to establish sea depths and other site conditions, which will provide necessary information to establish required intervention and proposals. These works are currently in hand and the actual implementation phase for development of proposals is earmarked to be commence once all the necessary permits by the authorities are granted so that works will be completed in time for the 2008 cruise season.
“With the work along Pinto Wharf coming to a conclusion, the Valletta Waterfront will regain the pristine glory it used to have when it was originally built by Grandmaster Pinto. This is definitely one of our main goals as a leading player in attracting tourists to Malta. In some months’ time we will be seeing further developments at the Valletta Waterfront; however these will be announced at a later stage,” said Chris Paris, general manager, Viset Malta plc.
