On the initiative of Siggiewi local council, the huge Laferla Cross and the adjacent chapel of the Annunciation on the high plateau known as Ta’ l-Gholja, will once again be foodlit during the nights of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

The steep track leading to the hill will also be floodlit so the hillside will be transformed into a Way of the Cross.

The Laferla cross was erected by Fr Pawl Laferla, of Siggiewi, in 1903 to mark the beginning of the 20th century. A set of stone statues representing the Passion of Our Lord were also installed along the steep track.

The original cross was destroyed during a storm in 1937. A replacement cross, erected in August 1963, was renovated in 1984. Siggiewi local council began floodlighting the Cross on Maundy Thursday night in 1994. Thousands of people visit Ta’ l-Gholja every year to pray.
