Malta Independent Thursday, 5 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

A 23-year-old Chadian irregular immigrant was yesterday jailed for six months after he pleaded guilty to attempting to escape from the detention centre at Ta’ Kandja, limits of Siggiewi.

Ahmed Salem pleaded guilty to attempting to escape from the compound on 2 April. He also pleaded guilty to relapsing in view of a previous conviction which also centred around an incident which took place at Ta’ Kandja last December.

Salem told the court that he could not remain at Ta’ Kandja because he could not get on with fellow detainees. He also said that he would like to return home to Chad but did not have a passport.

The court, presided over by magistrate Edwina Grima, sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment. Police inspector Sandro Zarb prosecuted.
