After having been postponed by over a month, the government is today expected to announce a date when controlled vehicular access to Valletta will be introduced.

Controlled access to Valletta should have been up and running on 1 March but had to be postponed in order for a few changes to be made to the proposed scheme, which is set to make the capital more pedestrian-friendly.

The controlled vehicular access to Valletta is a system by which access to Valletta will be charged.

Cars will be photographed as they enter and leave the capital and the car owners will be charged accordingly.

According to the proposals originally announced by the government, the rates of 35c for between 31 and 60 minutes and 35c per hour thereafter to a maximum of Lm2.80, will apply Mondays to Fridays between 8am and 6pm and on Saturdays between 8am and 1pm.

The first half-hour is always free, as are all other hours on Sundays and public holidays.

There has been no inkling of whether these tariffs will be implemented.
