A 56-year-old Enemalta employee died yesterday morning after he fell off the ladder he was working on in Marsascala.

The incident took place at around 11am in Triq il-Blajjiet in Marsascala when the man, who is from Safi, fell off the ladder after losing his balance. Sources said the man was working on the ladder which was resting on an electricity pole when he lost his balance and plummeted around three storeys.

The man was given first aid by his colleagues and other people who were nearby. An ambulance was dispatched on site but the man succumbed to his injuries on the way to St Luke’s Hospital.

Duty Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera was informed about the case. She appointed a number of court experts to assist her in the magisterial inquiry. Police investigations are still under way.

In a statement, Enemalta Corporation expressed condolences with the man’s wife and children and said that it would help the family in this difficult moment.

The corporation said its employee was working on the laying of new services in the road when the incident occurred. It said it was also conducting investigations to determine exactly what happened.

Meanwhile, a 33-year-old man was found dead in Qormi, in circumstances suggesting that he had fallen victim to a heroin overdose, the police said yesterday. This is the second fatal drug overdose in a week.

An autopsy will be carried out this morning to confirm the exact cause of the death. The man is from Qormi.

Duty Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera, who was informed about the case, appointed a number of court experts to assist her with the magisterial inquiry.

Police investigations are under way.

Also yesterday, a 30-year old man of African nationality lost his life tragically while swimming in Ghar Qawqla, Marsalforn, Gozo.

Preliminary investigations still have not revealed why the man found himself in difficulty as soon as he got into the water.

Although a man who was present tried to help him, the African man drowned.

Members from the Department of Civil Protection in Gozo were called on site to recover the body from the sea-bed.

Inspector Josric Mifsud is leading police investigations.
