Chess: Geoffrey Borg Appointed CEO of Global Chess BV

The President of the Malta Chess Federation Geoffrey D.Borg (photo) has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Global Chess BV, a Dutch company which has been set up to exclusively promote and market FIDE, the World Chess Federation and its world class events.

Borg is also current Vice-President of FIDE, as well as General Secretary of the Mediterranean Chess Association (MCA). He was elected to the Presidential Board of FIDE in an election held in Torino, Italy, in May, 2006. This new appointment is a prestigious opportunity not only for Maltese Chess but also for Maltese sport in general.

Borg, who holds the title of FIDE Master, has played chess for Malta in a number of international tournaments as well as Olympiads, and his best result was a silver medal on Board 1 in the Salonika Olympiad in 1984.

He graduated with first class honours in Business Management in 1986 from the University of Malta and a Masters in Business Administration from Warwick University in England in 1995. He worked with Simonds Farsons Cisk plc as General Manager in charge of Distribution and Credit between 1996 and 2007. He was also President of the Malta Association of Credit Management between 2001-2007. He is married to Loredana nee Cuschieri and they have two children, Cassandra and Jean Pierre.
