Gagga is a socio-political film based on Frans Sammut’s novel Il-Gagga. The film covers the hot social, political and religious issues that created unwritten parameters for all those living in Malta in the early 1970s.

The story revolves around Fredu, a young man who is struggling to cope with the immeasurable difficulties he encounters. Social and religious prejudice, political differences, taboos concerning intimacy and urban to rural dissimilarity, make Fredu feel caged.

Directed by acclaimed local talent who went on to achieve international fame Mario Philip Azzopardi, Gagga is a 75-minute feature film, produced over 35 years ago by university students forming part of RUSCA. The film was transferred to digital format and enhanced by Studio 7 Productions between 2005 and 2007.

It has now been released on two DVDs and includes the re-mastering of the film, English sub-titles and even commentaries by key people, including most of the actors, Jo Debono and Fr Peter Serracino Inglott.
