Art Exhibition by Christine X

Malta Independent Sunday, 27 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

An art exhibition entitled Aspirations with works by Christine X, is being held at Artitude Gallery, Tigné Street, Sliema between 1 and 30 June.

Fabrizio Mifsud B.A (Hons) wrote of the works exhibited: “It is an innate artistic versatility which comes across very strongly when one is first exposed to Christine X’s works. This flexibility in both subject matter and execution somehow becomes easily understood when one looks back to her artistic background. Tutored by Harry Alden and subsequently by the late Olaug Vethal, Christine X has taken in elements from both teachers and amalgamated them into her own work. Although this may not have been an easy task considering the sharply opposing tendencies of Alden’s hard edge technique and Vethal’s untamed mode of expression, she manages to do so in a seemingly casual way with an end result which is immediately recognisable as her own.

Bold, bright and in your face – as the artist herself heartedly describes it, her use of colour together with her powerful brushstrokes are what give her paintings their trademark. In Aspirations the artist seeks expression by exploring a variety of themes. Be it non-

representational, landscape or portrait painting; colour is what holds it all together, running as a common denominator throughout all of the works.”

For viewing, visit the gallery from Tuesday to Saturday from 8.30am to 1.30pm and from 4 to 7pm. For more info call 2131 6708/ 9984 4653 or email [email protected].
