Psychology Workshop

Malta Independent Tuesday, 5 June 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

CPD (Malta), in collaboration with WPF (counselling and psychotherapy), London, is holding a long-awaited workshop on the subject of time-limited therapy, on Saturday, 9 June, at the Victoria Hotel in Sliema, led by Debbie Vowles, a psycho-dynamic counsellor at WPF.

Ms Vowles has worked in hospitals with patients having HIV and sexually transmitted diseases. Previously, she has worked as a seminar leader and supervisor on the post-qualifying course in time-limited reproductive issues.

Time-limited dynamic psychotherapies have been developed over the past 50 years by a number of proponents. The aim of these therapies is to provide effective and cost-efficient services to patients who otherwise face long waiting lists in public clinics. The factors common to each of the techniques include increased therapist activity, the use of therapeutic focus, time restrictions and specific selection criteria. Initial time-limited therapy research has suggested that its benefits are substantial and that they are maintained over time.

This workshop is open to professionals who are working with short-term clients, including counsellors, psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, psychiatric nurses and students at an advanced stage of training.
