A 24-year-old Libyan was jailed for eight months and fined Lm200 after he was found guilty of being in possession of cannabis resin on the night between 21 and 22 March.

Akram Omar Ibrahim Tawerghi, a Tripoli resident, was also found guilty of damaging a motorbike, to the detriment of Carmel Chircop, in Paceville on the same night.

Prosecuting Inspector Carlo Ellul gave his testimony, saying that the accused was found to be in possession of a can hidden in his sock and in a pocket in his trousers.

The can contained nine pieces of cannabis resin that were separately wrapped in foil and the accused had told the police that he intended selling them, but when he testified in court, he said he had no intention of selling the drugs.

In a statement he had given the police, the accused admitted that he had been smoking cannabis for about three years.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano presided over the case. Police Inspector Carlo Ellul prosecuted.
