Momentum said it has filed a Freedom of Information request related to the number of heat-related deaths and hospital adminssions in July, when Malta was going through a prolonged heat-wave.

The FOI request, the party said, seeks information on the number of hospital admissions related to extreme heat conditions during the month of July and the localities of the respective patients, the daily number of deaths recorded, the number of sudden, unexpected or unattended deaths, any existing records or assessments relating to deaths suspected or considered to have been associated with extreme heat conditions and the patients' respective localities. It also requests comparative mortality figures for July in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

The FOI states clearly that it does not request any information that identifies any individual and that any information provided should be anonymised and supplied in a manner that does not disclose any personal identifying information

The request follows public concern in recent days about possible deaths during power outages and the impact of extreme heat on public health.

Katya Compagno, executive member of Momentum said, "We want to establish the impact the electrical outages and the heat wave had on the health of our community. For the sake of transparency and accountability we are asking for timely access to accurate information to help in an informed public discussion."

Momentum said it looks forward to the authorities responding to the request in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act and making the relevant anonymised information available in the public interest.
