Irregular migration was among the subjects discussed by President Eddie Fenech Adami yesterday at a meeting with the President of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos.

The meeting was held at the Presidential Palace at the start of a two-day state visit.

The Department of Information said the two presidents, who were accompanied by their wives, spoke of the long-standing good bilateral relations between the two countries. Both presidents believe that Malta and Cyprus bring an increased Mediterranean dimension to the European Union and have common interests in the Mediterranean region.

Among other issues of concern to both countries which were discussed were the future of the European Union, the Cyprus problem, and the potential of increasing business exchanges.

Among other visits, Dr and Mrs Fenech Adami called on the mayor of Nicosia, Mrs Eleni Mavrou. During this visit, the President was presented with the Medal of the City of Nicosia and the Honorary Diploma on the occasion of the state visit.

President Fenech Adami also met with His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos II, visited the Cathedral of St John and a Byzantine Museum, the Makarios III Foundation.

In the morning, Mrs Fenech Adami accompanied by Mrs Papadopoulou visited the old city of Nicosia, the Leventis Municipal Museum, the Observation Post at Shiacolas Tower and the Cyprus Handicraft Service. The President and Mrs Fenech Adami ended their two-day state visit to Cyprus by visiting Larnaca. In the afternoon, they returned to Nicosia where they hosted a reception in honour of President and Mrs Papadopoulos. Dr and Mrs Fenech Adami were expected back last night.
