The National Euro Changeover Committee (NECC) together with the Drama Unit within the Education Ministry are putting together a number of plays to educate and inform children about the euro changeover that will take place on 1 January.

Parliamentary secretary within the Finance Ministry Tonio Fenech yesterday visited the Drama Centre to watch one of the plays.

Mr Fenech told the children that they could pass on the information they learned from the play to their parents, and in doing so they will become euro ambassadors.

He said that euro wallets with dummy euro coins will be distributed to children in Year Three to Year Six to help them become familiar with the currency. Schools will also receive money kits.

Mr Fenech pointed out that there is an ongoing educational campaign about the changeover that is focused on children. All the schoolbooks will now make use of the euro currency while activity sheets are being distributed in both primary and secondary schools.

There is a section dedicated to children in the newspaper Euro Times while there are several children programmes on TVM and Education 22 dealing with the subject. Mr Fenech told the children that if they want more information, they can log on to the children’s section in the NECC website: www.euro.gov.mt.

Furthermore, he added, Skola Sajf 2007 is organising a programme called Welcome to the Euro, providing information about the euro to various schools.
