A man who yesterday admitted to charges of threatening to kill his wife as well as making threats to Appogg workers, a school headmistress and a female police constable, was yesterday remanded in custody and ordered to be detained at Mount Carmel Hospital.

Jesmond Azzopardi, 36, from Qormi, was charged with verbally threatening to kill his wife Sonia. He allegedly also made verbal threats over the telephone, mobile and through SMSs. He was also accused of threatening an Appogg service leader, the headmistress of the Carlo Diacono School in Zejtun and a female police constable. He was further accused of disobeying police orders, breaching the peace and swearing in public.

Before magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna, the accused pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.

The submissions on punishment were held behind closed doors after the magistrate remarked that he was “very worried” about the man’s criminal record and history of incidents involving his wife and child.

The magistrate put off the case for judgement to next week and ordered that in the meantime the man is held at the Mount Carmel Hospital.

Police Inspector Joseph Agius prosecuted while Dr Robert Abela appeared for the accused.
