From Mr J. Schembri
Joe Portelli’s letter and the birth of a new political party (TMIS, 10 June) brought to mind the Rhinoceros Party in Canada. The name of the party was inspired by an election in an African country but I don’t want to digress.
The Rhino Party makes itself known only if there are some burning issues leading up to an election. During one heated campaign some years ago, the economy, the environment and pollution from motor vehicles were issues for which the major parties had sure-fire solutions. The government had established a number of make-work projects to combat rising unemployment.
The Rhinos had the “perfect” platform to save the nation. As a make- work project, the Rockies will be flattened. This would have the added benefit that the residents of the West Coast will have a good view of the Prairies.
New traffic regulations will be implemented. Vehicles will start driving on the left instead of the right side of the road, gradual implementation starting with trucks and buses first. Money will be printed with a blank space on the top right hand corner so that citizens can put in a number of their choice.
Needless to say the Rhino Party never got too many votes but gave the voters something to chuckle about and maybe to think of priorities when election day arrived.
