‘Live Simply so others can simply live’

From Ms L. Camilleri

Before we can tackle anything as complex as military spending we have to come to terms with two underlying causes – fear and greed. Both as individuals and as nations we fear that if we have more than our equal share of the goodies someone will come and take it away from us – hence security fences and defence spending respectively. The fire of greed is fanned by advertising extolling that the more we have, the happier we will be. If as individuals we cannot curb our own insatiable spending, we cannot change the consciousness of humanity as a whole. If every member of the global community had equal opportunities and was satisfied with that, there would be peace worldwide. It is up to us all to start the ball rolling worldwide by curbing our own spending. The untenable situation at present is that half the world’s population lives in dire poverty while billions are wasted on armaments.

As Mahatma Gandhi said: “Live simply so others can simply live.”

Louise Camilleri
