The body of 60-year-old man from San Gwann was found yesterday burnt in a white car next to the reverse osmosis plant in Pembroke in what appear to be mysterious circumstances.

At around 7.15am the police received various reports that a white Peugeot 106, parked on the side of Triq il-Fortizza in Pembroke, was on fire.

When the police and Civil Protection Department personnel arrived to extinguish the fire, they found a body in the driver’s seat.

Police have identified the body as that of a 60-year-old man from San Gwann but could not confirm how the fire started and are leaving all options open in their investigations.

The car, a white Peugeot 106, was parked facing the sea and was extensively burnt.

Sources close to the police said that the man had left his house and driven down to Pembroke early yesterday morning.

A man in his mid-30s, wearing a white t-shirt and chef’s trousers, was called to the scene and was visibly upset when he saw the burnt-out car.

High-ranking police officials were called on site, including Deputy Commissioner Joe Cachia, Assistant Commiss-ioner Manwel Cassar and Superintendent Pierre Calleja.

Police inspectors Chris Pullicino and Sharon Tanti and forensic expert Mario Scerri were also at the scene.

Duty magistrate Jacqueline Padovani appointed several experts to assist in her inquiry.
