The Association of Catering Establishments (ACE) has published that, according to a PwC study it commissioned, in the first quarter this year, just over four fifths (81%) of catering establishments answered that they are open to tapping into EU funds for future investments.
This result, found in PwC's Access to Finance Survey for Q1 2026, was announced during a press conference that the Minister for Tourism, Jo Etienne Abela, was present for.
In a statement, the Ministry for Tourism said that this survey analysed the experiences of catering establishments vis-à-vis access to bank financing and the use of funds and grants, particularly those tied to the European Union.
On the survey, ACE said that it highlighted the need for more awareness about the funds and schemes available, as well as support services for operators so that they can successfully apply for these funds. Simultaneously, ACE called for more collaboration with local banks to make financing processes more accessible.
ACE said that it will continue to work with the government, financial institutions, and all stakeholders to design concrete solutions that respond to sector needs whilst enhancing its competitiveness in the coming years.
The Minister for Tourism said that investment in the catering sector is crucial for Malta to continue improving its tourism product and attract more quality visitors.
"Quality must remain at the heart of our vision for tourism. To attract quality tourists, we must offer a quality product, and this requires continuous investment from the sector," he said.
"In collaboration between government, financial institutions, and the industry, we will continue to raise awareness on existing funds and schemes and facilitate access to financing so that operators have the necessary tools to invest, innovate, and continue to improve the service they offer," Minister Abela said.
The Tourism Minister concluded by saying that this work aligns with Malta's long-term strategy, Malta Vision 2050, as well as the National Tourism Strategy (2021-2030), which aim to continue improving this sector's competitiveness through higher quality, and more valuable and sustainable tourism.
