A customs drug sniffer dog was being toasted yesterday for a considerable find of heroin on a passenger who had just landed from Tripoli on Tuesday.

A statement said the dog, Ringo, reacted to a particular piece of luggage when the customs’ dog section was doing routine work at Malta International Airport.

The luggage belonged to a 24-year-old Libyan who had just come in from Tripoli.

The man was stopped by customs officials after he went through the green channel. The luggage was scanned by an X-Ray machine, which indicated something suspicious, possibly a false bottom.

A subsequent, more intensive scrutiny of the luggage yielded the false bottom which hid a packet that was found to contain 766 grams of heroin.

The anti-drugs police squad is conducting further investigations.
