A resident and the owner of a scrap yard in Kalkara filed a judicial protest against the Police Commissioner and the Attorney General yesterday over the granting of a police permit for fireworks to be let off from an adjacent field in view of the huge fires that engulfed their property during last year’s feast.

Lawrence Attard and ELA Ltd explained that Mr Attard is a resident of Ghammieq Street, and ELA Ltd is the owner of an adjacent scrapyard.

They said that during the feast of St Joseph last year, the Police Commissioner had granted the feast organisers a permit to let off fireworks from a nearby field. On 15 July last year, the fireworks had started a fire in the scrapyard that had resulted in thousands of liri worth of damage.

They explained that, following this incident, the police had launched an investigation into the matter. Notwithstanding this, however, the Police Commiss-ioner had still issued a permit for fireworks to be let off from the same field during this year’s feast.

Mr Attard and ELA Ltd called on the Police Commissioner to withdraw the permit he had issued and held him responsible for any damage they may sustain.
