Artist Vince Briffa is showing a video and audio installation entitled Body of Glass – After Caravaggio at the cellars of Auberge d’Italie between 25 July and 19 August. This work forms part of Caravaggio – quote… unquote, an exhibition of contemporary art by five local artists in five different spaces curated by Dr Keith Sciberras and co-ordinated by Davinia Galea. This exhibition forms part of this year’s Malta Arts Festival.

Body of Glass – After Caravaggio is a work that addresses the body as being simultaneously the object and the subject of experience. Echoing Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro idiom in its overall aesthetic, this video work conceives the human body as being both the performer and the object being performed upon, capable of simultaneously providing and being the locus of spectacle, where gesture and action translate into textural, rhythmic sounds and resonant structures. The work therefore concerns the human flesh and its reaction to harassment set in the contrasts of light and shade.

Vince Briffa studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and Leeds University and is finishing his doctoral research at the Electronic and Digital Art Unit of the University of Central Lancashire in the UK. He is a regular visiting artist at both Leeds and Central Lancashire universities where he lectures in their digital arts facilities.

The exhibition is open between Monday and Saturday during the morning and entrance is free.
