WasteServ said yesterday that the treatment of the remains of dead animals will soon take place at the incineration plant at Marsa. This is being upgraded and awaiting the conclusion of the permitting process.

WasteServ issued the statement following reports that appeared in other media about the dumping of dogs by the SPCA at the Sant’ Antnin Waste Treatment Plant in Marsascala following instructions by WasteServ, after being put to sleep.

WasteServ said that the Sant’ Antnin Plant was, at present, not producing compost due to work that was underway to upgrade the plant.

It also rejected allegations that the compost may be contaminated and explained that organic waste at the plant was compacted and transferred to the Ghallis engineered landfill.

Furthermore, it added, the dry recyclables – material

collected from bring-in sites – are being sorted at the Marsa temporary facility because of the temporary closure of the Sant’ Antnin plant.

As a result, “any allegations that the dead animals may have come into contact with recycled material are also incorrect and unfounded,” WasteServ said.
