A pensioner yesterday appeared in court to answer charges of abusing his grand-daughter, now 17, over the past years.

The 66-year-old, who cannot be named by court order in an effort to protect the identity of the alleged victim, wept as he pleaded not guilty to charges of defilement and indecent and violent assault of his son’s daughter.

The court, after hearing submissions by defence lawyer Roberto Montalto, granted bail after taking into account the accused’s age and medical condition. The court, presided over by magistrate Miriam Hayman, made it a point to ensure that the man, who said he was hard of hearing, understood the bail conditions. He was told that he would have to remain at his home in Paola and that he was not to approach or contact his niece in any way.

The court also issued a protection order for the girl and bound the accused with an Lm500 deposit and an Lm1,000 personal guarantee. Police inspector Louise Calleja prosecuted.
