WasteServ said it is currently upgrading the existing compost plant at Sant’ Antnin, a project that is moving at a steady pace.

In a statement, WasteServ said it is expected that once completed, this plant will be able to accept 35,000 tonnes of biodegradable waste each year as well as 36,000 tonnes of dry collected waste such as paper, plastic, metal and glass which will be separated and sent for recycling.

The Sant’ Antnin Plant has been in operation since 1993. Often household waste included dead animals which were always disposed of in a separate container alongside other inorganic waste and sent to the landfill. Since upgrading works have began, this service to dispose of dead animals has been continued in the same manner. Animals are placed in a separate container which is then taken to the engineered landfill on a regular basis. WasteServ stressed that the incident recently reported in certain media is simply part of this process.

The company is also working on a new plant that will treat waste using high temperatures, also known as an incinerator. This incinerator will start being used once the necessary permits have been issued. Since it is expected that this incinerator will soon be in use, any carcasses will be stored in a specialised freezer awaiting treatment.
