The Zejtun Scout group recently hosted an 11-day youth exchange at Marsascala as part of their 90th anniversary celebrations. Thirty-five young people from Estonia, Lithuania, Malta and Romania participated in this project, the title of which was RRR – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

The multilateral exchange was packed with various activities such as raft building, a

treasure hunt, a night hike and a visit to a

recycling plant, among other things. These activities were complemented by workshops at which the young people discussed issues related to waste management and how European citizens can help by reducing, reusing and recycling waste. Two outcomes of the project were a leaflet and four video clips promoting the three R’s in waste management

Maltese group coordinator Adrian Ferriggi explained: “Through such experiential learning activities, young people can learn more about environmental issues and actively contribute to the ever-growing problem of waste management”.

Steven Zerafa, the young person who came forward with the initiative, emphasised the importance of “creating a fun atmosphere among the participants in order to instil ownership in this international project and

eventually have the young people developing new networks, one of the aims of the Youth In Action Programme”. He added that “promoting different cultures and traditions was another important goal”.

This international camp was co-funded by the Youth in Action programme. The Zejtun Scout group is also supported by Zejtun local council, through the Youth Empowerment Centre, and WasteServ.
